Stays
Stays is a data page on the Travel desk of Glassbox Auditing. Hotels and Airbnb homes in any destination on one map each, the booking sites' rates for your dates, Airbnb prices by neighbourhood, and how the price of a night away is moving: the hotel CPI, GSA per diems, tracked destinations and Airbnb snapshots. What does this page lead to?
- Prices & Inflation (Macro): Lodging away from home, hotels included, is an item in the consumer price index, so a broad rise in room rates adds to services inflation. (moves the same way; the next monthly report; economy scale) Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
- Company (Companies): Hotel chains' fees are tied to their hotels' room revenue, so higher room rates at steady occupancy raise their results, and Airbnb's take rises with its hosts' prices. - Credit & Housing (Macro): Homes let as short-term rentals are off the long-term market, and studies link more Airbnb listings in a neighbourhood to slightly higher rents and home prices there. (moves the same way; years; sector scale) Source: FRED (Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis).
- Lawmaking (Domestic Intelligence): Fast growth in short-term rentals has led states and cities to pass registration or limit laws, such as Hawaii's 2024 law letting counties phase out vacation rentals. What feeds this page?
- Health (Global Intelligence): Hotel and short-let demand in a destination falls when health advisories are raised for it, which tends to pull room rates there down. (moves the other way; weeks; sector scale) Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
- Visas & Green Cards (Immigration): Foreign visitors spend on hotels and short-term rentals, so the counts of tourist and business entries move with that spending. (moves the same way; months; sector scale) Source: DHS Yearbook of Immigration Statistics.
- Flights (Travel): More people flying to a destination means more nights booked there, so busy routes tend to go with higher hotel and Airbnb rates at the destination. (moves the same way; same season; sector scale) Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
