Wildfires & Hurricanes
Wildfires & Hurricanes is a data page on the Global Intelligence desk of Glassbox Auditing. The current hurricanes, tropical storms and large wildfires, each with its forecast cone or burn area, the traffic cameras in it, the cargo airports, postal plants, ports, power plants, LNG terminals and listed companies' sites inside it, and the flood-insurance record around it. It shows which companies and supply lines sit in a storm's or fire's path before damage is reported.

What does this page lead to?
- Insurance Coverage (Domestic Intelligence): A hurricane landfall in Florida, Texas or Louisiana raises flood and wind claims, landing first on the NFIP and on Florida-focused insurers. (moves the same way; weeks; sector scale) Source: FEMA OpenFEMA, NFIP Redacted Claims v3 (flood insurance claims since 1978).
- Fuel & Charging (Domestic Intelligence): Gulf of Mexico hurricanes shut offshore oil platforms and Gulf Coast refineries, which tends to lift gasoline and diesel prices for a few weeks, as Hurricane Harvey did in 2017. (moves the same way; 1-3 weeks; economy scale) Source: EIA Gasoline and Diesel Fuel Update (weekly retail $/gallon).
- Natural Gas (Macro): Storms that shut Gulf Coast LNG export terminals keep gas in the U.S., which tends to lower Henry Hub while the terminals are out. (moves the other way; days to weeks; sector scale) Source: EIA natural gas data (API v2): weekly storage; monthly production, consumption, trade and prices.
- Cloud & Hubs (Companies): Companies' warehouses, factories and data centers inside a storm's cone or a fire's perimeter face closures or damage, which they report as storm or fire losses in their next results. (moves the other way; same day; company scale) Source: Company records: S&P 500 sectors, SEC annual reports (sites, segments, products), OpenStreetMap buildings, Epoch AI models.
- Business Activity (Macro): A major landfall cuts that month's sales and output in the affected states, and rebuilding raises construction and car sales afterwards. (either way, depending on the cause; 1-3 months; economy scale) Source: U.S. Census Bureau Economic Indicators (retail, durable goods, construction, housing, business formation, inventories, trade).
- Flights (Travel): Airports in a hurricane's path close for a day or more, cancelling passenger flights and holding cargo at hubs such as Miami. (moves the other way; same day; sector scale) Source: FAA, all-cargo airports: landed weight of cargo aircraft by airport.
- Energy (Global Intelligence): Gulf of Mexico hurricanes force offshore platforms to evacuate and shut in output and close Gulf Coast refineries and LNG terminals, as Hurricane Ida shut in nearly all Gulf oil output in 2021. (moves the other way; same day; sector scale) Source: NOAA National Hurricane Center, active storms (CurrentStorms.json and advisories).
What feeds this page?
- Traffic Cameras (Global Intelligence): Wildfires & Hurricanes draws these cameras inside or near each storm or fire, so closed and damaged roads can be seen beside the cargo airports, ports and company sites in the same area. (either way, depending on the cause; same day; sector scale)
